There is a good deal of scientific evidence that demonstrates that chronic medical conditions such as chronic pain become chronic as a result of a hyper-aroused nervous system which exacerbates physical symptoms. Chronic medical conditions can result in anxiety and/or depression which can contribute to a vicious cycle of chronic medical symptoms leading to anxiety or depression which fuels physical symptoms. This is true for a variety of chronic medical conditions including chronic pain, digestive disorders (such as irritable bowel syndrome, Crohns disease and colitis), cancer, chronic cardiovascular disease, arthritis (both rheumatoid and osteoarthritis), and a host of other chronic medical conditions. What all of this means is that attending to one’s emotional health offers another avenue for addressing chronic medical conditions. Psychotherapy can provide an opportunity to address the emotional impact that a chronic medical condition can have on one’s mental health. When unaddressed, chronic medical conditions can lead to problems with depression, anxiety, self-esteem, as well as complicate relationships with others.
