When an adopted child has emotional or behavioral difficulties it usually has to do with the loss of their original parents and/or the treatment they experienced prior to being adopted. Orphanages and foster homes are no substitute for a loving permanent home. Loss is part of every adoptee’s experience and it is the chance to mourn these losses that can lead to healing and growth. Unfortunately, the best care possible in an adoptive home cannot heal the emotional wounds left from a child’s pre-adoptive past.  These wounds usually show themselves in the child’s behavior. Misbehavior, explosive behavior, attachment problems, and withdrawal are common. Therapy provided by a therapist who is knowledgable about the impact of adopted children’s early wounds and disruptions in development can offer immense amounts of help to adopted children and to their adoptive parents.
